MotoMING A1200 Review by Ubergizmo

By guest editor Steven Nersesian

This offering from Motorola clearly represents the direction that Motorola is heading after their disastrous, albeit profitable and brand building, release of the RAZR line. Sorry to hang more s*%t on the RAZR but if it weren't such a sleek, beautiful-but-manly phone it just might be the worst ever product to ever exist. I'll rant more about this subject another time.

So coming off of that you might think I'm going to completely trash the A1200. But hold on just a minute... don't judge me!!! I really like this phone!!!!!!! The interface is truly a step up from the RAZR (wow... I really hate… no dislike, that naming system). And the fit and finish of the product is very very nice. It is quite a svelte, modern-looking phone (I had the white with silver and black accents).
Even in white it doesn't look like a girly phone. The black has a stronger visual impact but beware of the fingerprint issue. And THANK YOU for using a touch screen. There is nothing more annoying than a graphically rich interface that requires you to use a pointing device to navigate. I found that I could use my finger for most operations.

The Good: The transparent flip cover is very striking. Click the volume down key and the display lights up with all your current pertinent information. It is really a nice touch. The buttons all have a very positive feel to them. They don't rattle or squeak and are quickly recognizable by feel. The flip feels solid... and when talking on the phone it feels secure. And I really, really, really like touch screens. Have I mentioned that I like touchs creens? This on is very responsive... I could quickly dial numbers without error, although the virtual keyboard's density required use of the stylus, which I didn't mind. I got used to it. I found the voice quality to be excellent especially relative to their current offerings.

On the Fence: There are quite a few cool seeming apps included on the device.... like a business card reader that is supposed to use the camera to take a picture then use recognition software to capture the details into text and save it to your contacts. Trouble is that after repeated attempts to make it work I gave up. Then there's the photo editing app... which sounds cool except all you can basically do is draw random squiggles over a picture you've just taken which isn't very useful. Maybe if you wanted to write a goofy note over your dorky friend's picture and send it to all of the rest of your friends, okay... but otherwise this isn't replacing Photoshop anytime soon. And all the usual "smartphone" features are there... calendar, audio player, camera, email, but nothing earth-shattering or innovative.

The Bad: The interface, although greatly improved over current Motorola offerings, is still lagging behind the industry. I found there to be too few settings and options (like control for what is displayed on the main screen with the flip cover closed) or at least so buried that they are practically unusable. Email, web and general connectivity was quite slow... surprising given how responsive the rest of the device felt. And I was bummed to wake up one morning and the stylus tip had sheared off. Good thing they included a second on in the box.

Bottom Line: This is a solid phone with a solid interface. It still has all the quirks of a Motorola product (seeming functionality with little usability) but they are less noticeable than previous offerings.

I give it 7 out of 10 stars. It gives me hope that Motorola will continue to improve their product offerings and are well aware that the market is getting competitive at the usability level. I think this product will be a success for Motorola when they release it here under the "MotoMING A1200" moniker.

Oh yeah, and the price of the phone in India(Cochin, Kerala) is Rs. 12,600. It is one great gadget for the price, believe me...you will just love the way people ogle at the phone when you stand at the mall and tap on the screen using the stylus!!!

I bought my Ming just a week ago....I upgraded from a Nokia 5200 to the Ming. I did my homework by reviewing various sites. One thing that i am very interested in a pfone is its capability to handle .wma audio types. Many phones do not handle it at all. For newcomers, .wma is a windows based file which compresses an mp3 file say 150% or more. It is very useful when u have a memory card of around 512 MB and want around 300 songs on it. The main reason why i bought the 5200 was cuz it had this capability to handle .wma. On review of
the Motorola Motoming, I found that it was a Linux based device and that it could handle only mp3 and .aac files. However, the clarity of .aac files is nothing compared to .wma. I was a little upset about the phone not being able to handle .wma files but i bought it nonetheless.
Let me tell u, I was pleasantly surprised to know that the phone handled .wma files types too!!! Now I have 130 songs on my card with still 257 MB left!!!!
The other features on the phone are fabulous too...a business card reader to capture all details of a person through his card, a superb 2.0MP camerae etc. However, the phone's video quality does suck. So does the volume output. The volume output may just be enough to satisfy someone so if u want that lil extra volume, u may not have it. When you wanna go to the store and check out the phone, simply check out these two features and if you are happy with them, you will definitely be happy with the phone!!!

Had the phone since July 2006 and it's great. Go to motorolafans.com. The community has come up with Stickies on everything...INCLUDING how to update the shortcuts on the homescreen. Nice review, but even more deets on the forum.

What an ugly photo. Couldn't you perhaps make a worse cable mess (say a cable hairball) and place it in front?. Also why the screen shut off?.

I think you are very biased against Motorola and your previous impressions on other models (by your own admission) are clouding your judgement. Shame on you.

I've actually had this phone since June of last year. I do like this phone better than the RAZR just because this uses open sources software -- an Linux operating system. So I'm able to go in and tweak whatever I want. I can flash it with better firmware and whatnot. With the newer firmware, there's a lot better functionality. And the Chinese handwriting recognition is superb. Unless you got the A1200i or A1200r. I have one of the original Ming A1200.

well of course the first released models will not work to the full extent. Any system released will have glitches in the first batch. Even sony's release of the PS3 didn't go off scotch free.

It is a great phone and seems to be the perfect mix between a PDA and a Phone. BUT, it does not work as it should. My 1200 is always blocked or still and i can not touch any button on the touch screen. I have to disconnect the battery to re-initiate.
It is a total exasperating situation.

Steve... My context for calling it disastrous was the RAZR's horrendous user interface and fit and finish. I don't know one person that has used a RAZR and loved it. It is "successful" because it is a sexy looking phone, which I think is a very important component but for me usability is what makes a phone work into my life successfully. An attractive package is nothing more than empty fashion.

Kinda hard to understand how you think the Razr line was "disastrous" since it's been the number one selling phone in the world since it debuted. So maybe your review of the A1200 is equally flawed?
